Philippine PLDT users to hit 40M

Manila Times Thursday, 10 December 2009 PHILIPPINE Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) said it enjoyed faster growth in mobile phone subscribers in the fourth quarter of the year because early election-related spending. “We will end the year with 40 million subscribers,” Danilo Mojica, Smart Communication Inc. head for wireless consumer division told reporters.

As of December 8, the combined subscribers of Smart and Talk ‘N Text hit 39.7 million, up by 600,000 subscribers compared with the 39.1 million at end-September, Mojica said.
At end-June, the company had 38.5 million subscribers.

Philippine Daily Inquirer 12/03/2009 MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) said it will be ready to launch, in six to 12 months, its landmark “broadband over power lines (BPL)” service, seen as a new technology that will fast-forward the growth of Internet use in the country.

The BPL technology is a by-product of the PLDT group’s acquisition of a controlling stake in Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), the country’s largest power distributors.

The new technology, as its name suggests, will allow PLDT to efficiently bring broadband services to virtually all of Meralco’s 24 million customers concentrated in Metro Manila and nearby areas at a minimal cost.

PLDT Watchpad subscriptions exceed expectations, says official

From the Sunstar Cebu AN OFFICIAL of an internet service provider in the country said the subscriber take-up of its Internet-based television service exceeded the company’s expectations.

There are now over 500,000 MyDSL subscribers but Dujali refused to disclose the exact number of those who registered for the Watchpad service since the formal report is yet to be filed.

Aside from films, Dujali said the company is also thinking of coming up with a gaming and arcade area for its MyDSL service and planning to feature a live stream video of the Level Up Live—considered as the biggest event in the online gaming industry.

Dujali said the company is also working on getting radio stations to air live sessions over Watchpad.

Before the end of the year, Watchpad will have five more new channels for its subscribers.

Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co. (PLDT) assistant vice-president and category head for its DSL service Gary Dujali also said the Watchpad feature of PLDT MyDSL will continue to be a free service for its subscribers.

With a call rate of P1.50 per minute to the US and Canada, Balingit said more consumers will appreciate the value offerings of the budget card. She also pointed out that PLDT’s telecommunications infrastructure gives the company leverage as consumers will prefer using budget cards because they are assured of fast and clear connection when they call family and friends overseas. “This is backed up by our market research data wherein 85 percent of PLDT budget card users are very satisfied with the service,” she said.

My comment Note that Sun offers a P2 minute call rate overseas with your regular cell load not a special card load like PLDT and SMART also offers a P2.5 rate per minute to many more countries which benefit OFW workers families greatly also with their regular load which is much less hassle,

• Right click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTION

The TCP/IP properties should be set to “Obtain IP Address Automatically” and “Obtain DNS Address Automatically”.

To start with;

TIP 1If you don’t hear any dial tone, hear static or noise from your landline, Call 173.

TIP 2Make sure your modem is connected to both your PC/Laptop and phone line.

TIP 3Set-up is color coded and cables should fit snugly into the right port. Make sure there are no loose connections.

TIP 4You can also try re-setting your modem. Turn your PC and modem off. Next, turn the modem on and wait for a few minutes after the modem’s POWER, ETHERNET and DSL lights have turned green before turning on the PC again.

PLDT myDSL subscribers rarely go offline nowadays unless they get out of loop on the coolest gigs in their new cyberspace haunt, the myView channel.

Launched recently at Jill’s Global City in Taguig, the myView channel on PLDT MyDSL’s Watchpad sizzled with shows about almost everything; from self-help tips on how to maximize DSL to fashion, music, gadgets, fitness, entertainment and more!

Many of the MyDSL Watchpad’s channel ambassadors are GMA Artist Center talents such as Isabel Oli, Victor Aliwalas, Rhian Ramos, Gino dela Peña, Steff Prescott and Stephanie Henares.

MetroPac, PLDT to pause on acquisitions next year

Following a number of big-ticket acquisitions, Metro Pacific Investments Corp. and the PLDT group won’t likely make new investments next year, the two firms’ top executive said, citing the need to take care of new businesses.

“Maybe next year, it’s time to regroup, consolidate, refresh. [Perhaps we may hold off] new investments,” Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of Metro Pacific and Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co., told reporters yesterday.

“We have too much in our plate ... I do not think it’s a money issue. It is a management issue,” he added.

Mr. Pangilinan was responding to queries on whether the Metro Pacific-PLDT bloc was avoiding a costly buyout of minority shareholders in Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) after last week’s deal to buy an additional stake in the country’s largest power distributor from the Lopez family.

Mr. Pangilinan said his group would particularly focus on the North Harbor development and television network TV5.

“It’s time to regroup. There are things to fix [such as] North Harbor Center ... We have to fix Channel 5, there are many more [things to fix],” he said.

In March, Pilipino Telephone Corp., a PLDT unit, bought a 20% stake in Meralco from Lopez-led First Philippine Holdings for $414 million.

Last month, Metro Pacific completed the acquisition of a 14.7% stake in the power distributor by buying the shares of its unit New Gallant Ltd. and the PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund (total of 13%) and by acquiring shares from the open market (1.7%).

The Pangilinan group now holds a combined 34.7% stake in Meralco through Metro Pacific (14.7%) and PLDT unit Pilipino Telephone Corp. (20%). First Pacific partly owns PLDT.

Last week, Lopez-led First Philippine Holdings Corp. accepted the offer of Metro Pacific to buy an additional 6.7% in Meralco for P22.4 billion.

If Metro Pacific gets the Lopez shares, it would end up owning 41.4% of the utility.

Metro Pacific has also signed a long-term contract with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila to manage Cardinal Santos Medical Center. The company said it was still open to acquiring other hospitals.

Last month, the firm bagged the contract to operate Manila North Harbor. It is planning to spend as much as P6 billion to develop the country’s oldest sea port.

Recently, Mediaquest Holdings, Inc., a unit of the Beneficial Trust Fund of PLDT, purchased a 75% share in Cojuangco-led ABC Development Corp., the owner and operator of TV5.

The group is also in talks to acquire management of the Philippine Star newspaper. Media-quest Holdings has a minor stake in BusinessWorld.

In the same interview, Mr. Pangilinan insisted that the sale of the Lopez shares in Meralco adhered to existing rules governing tender offers.

Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) President Winston F. Garcia claims last week’s sale would circumvent the mandatory tender offer rule. GSIS said it has acquired a 4% stake after selling 27% in Meralco to San Miguel Corp. last year.

Mr. Garcia said he also has the option of filing a complaint before regulators should Metro Pacific refuse to buy out minority shareholders for P300 per share, the same price offered to the Lopezes.

He also threatened to buy shares held by the public to get one Meralco board seat.

Mr. Pangilinan said: “There are rules and regulations that govern tender offers. We follow the rules and we abide by the rules. It is within what is provided by rules. We consulted our legal counsel on these rules.”
Under existing rules, any individual -- or a group acting in concert -- who acquires a 35% stake in any company within the span of one year must bid for the shares held by the minority at the highest price paid during the past six months.

Last week’s deal with the Lopezes was not an outright purchase. Metro Pacific will first lend the Lopezes’ First Holdings P11.2 billion, effectively securing rights over new shares.

A call option on the 6.7% stake will lapse on March 31, 2010. If it takes the option, Metro Pacific must pay P22.4 billion on top of the P11.2 billion, which will remain a loan.

Mr. Garcia claimed the setup would allow Metro Pacific to do away with the tender offer requirement.

Metro Pacific shares continued to take a beating and lost another 6.66% or P0.20 to close at P2.80 apiece yesterday. Analysts said investors were worried over how the infrastructure-based holding firm would secure financing for its new acquisitions. PLDT had full page ads in Sunday Philippine Star November 9, 2009 promoting this new offer which sounds interesting although nothing is mentioned on their website or other blogs so you will have to stop into their business centers to inquire or call their number above. It is wireless so it must be using the SMART network.

Again I think phone companies should put out news releases online and add these promos to their website before announcing it in newspapers to allow better distribution of information

As a responsible citizen of this country, I’m firmly resolved to bring this complaint to the attention of PLDT and heighten the awareness of subscribers to what PLDT is offering in their business units all over the Philippines. I felt like victimized by a systematic fraud being offered by PLDT’s sales personnel who is offering “PLDT’s Wireless Internet at Home” whose features are far beyond the promises that they offer when dealing with inquirers. Let me enumerate several misinformation that they have presented me during product offer:

1. I was told that the speed is up to 512 kbps – it’s indeed right that this is not a guaranteed speed (they say maximum) but not even getting half of what they’re advertising is completely ridiculous. This is a complete lie which they are proud to advertise. I tested the speed of the connection and its only getting 100 kbps. I might get satisfied if I’m getting at least 250 kbps but 100 kbps is completely unacceptable.

2. Second, I was told by the sales agent that the modem has router function (manual states that the modem is WIFI capable) but upon checking the light of the modem, the wireless light is off. I checked with their customer service and was told that the WIFI function is deactivated. What kind of service is this? This is again another violation of what they have promised me. There’s not even a note in the package stating that the WIFI function is deactivated. I took their package because of the WIFI only to know that it doesn’t have any.
3. Third, I returned the package to the sales branch in Quezon City and asked for a refund and was given a collection receipt which I need to bring to nearest business office. Upon going there, I was told that the refund is subject for approval and they are uncertain whether the P1200.00 I paid will be refunded. This really made me mad, I’m not able to use their service and yet they’re holding up my money and was being told to make follow-up to 171 which is really hard to reach. What kind of service is this? By the way, the person before me also returned the Internet at Home Kit mainly because of the same problem. Now who is lying here?

I’m writing this to stop the false advertisement and systematic robbery that they are doing. I might sound very upset but I have the responsibility to let my countrymen know of this incompetent service that PLDT is offering. Enough of this false advertisement. I’m sure MVP is not happy with this but he deserves to learn this and stop the issuance of this package to the public. I might be small citizen challenging a company giant like PLDT but this is what I believe is right and I stand to tell the truth about this farce.

I hope this letter gets to the ear of PLDT.

PLDT trims revenue forecast as mobile growth slows

MANILA - Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT), the country's most valuable firm, trimmed its full-year revenue guidance, reckoning strong typhoons that have battered parts of the country may dent consumer spending.

While PLDT cut the revenue forecast by 1% to P146 billion ($3.06 billion), it kept its core earnings guidance, which strips out currency and derivatives gains, at P41 billion, up 8% from 2008.

Analysts also expect PLDT to post 2009 net profit of around 41 billion pesos, up 18.2 percent, based on Thomson Reuters, as spending ahead of May 2010 presidential polls boosts earnings.

PLDT, owned by Hong Kong's First Pacific Co Ltd, Japan's NTT Communications and NTT DoCoMo, said July-September net income jumped 49% to P10.3 billion, as its foray into power distribution helped mask slower growth in its main mobile phone business. Analysts had forecast profit of P9.9 billion.

"While we anticipate the usual boost in the fourth quarter from holiday spending, we expect this may be somewhat dampened as the recent typhoons caused extensive damage all around," Chairman Manuel Pangilinan said in a statement.

Aggressive pricing promotions by rivals have forced PLDT to come up with cheaper mobile offerings, and a recent regulation to extend the life of phone cards has made it tougher for PLDT to grow its revenue.

"The macroeconomy is still weak, but there is also an element of increasing competition," said Jody Santiago, head of research at UBS Securities Philippines Inc.

The company added a net 580,000 mobile subscribers in July-September, the lowest tally in 11 quarters.
"For me, the third quarter marks an inflection point showing that the growth period may be finished and that there is a risk of a decline in operations," Santiago said.

He said PLDT's Meralco earnings could compensate for weaknesses in its traditional operations.
PLDT hopes recent investments in a local broadcaster and in Manila Electric Co (Meralco), the country's largest power retailer, will fortify its dominance of the domestic telecoms market.

PLDT said its mobile service revenue, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the group total, was flat in the third quarter, while earnings before interest, tax and depreciation fell 3%. Core earnings climbed 11% to P10.1 billion.

PLDT income rises 15% to P30 billion in 9 months

MANILA, Philippines - Telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) reported a 15-percent increase in its net income to P30 billion in the first nine months of the year, from P26.2 billion in the same period last year, company officials said yesterday.

Core net income, which excludes exceptional items, meanwhile, rose 11 percent to P31 billion during the same period.

PLDT president and CEO Napoleon Nazareno said this year’s results reflect the higher recurring net income, lower net losses from the foreign exchange revaluation of their financial assets and liabilities and derivatives, and the lower statutory tax rate.

He added that the income figures now factor in the 20-percent equity share of subsidiary Pilipino Telephone Inc. (Piltel) in the earnings of power utility Manila Electric Co. (Meralco).

PLDT Group chairman Manuel Pangilinan indicated they are now taking a cautious stance and slightly revising downwards their revenue and earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) targets to P146 billion and P88 to P88.5 billion, respectively.

He, however, said their core profit guidance remains at P41 billion for the whole of 2009, or eight percent more than in 2008. “Based on the nine-month results, and barring unforeseen circumstances, reported net income for the year is likely to exceed last year’s number of P34 billion,” he said, adding that fourth quarter 2009 core income will likely reach P10 billion.
He pointed out that the third quarter performance was adversely affected by the lagged effect of the global recession on the economy, compounded by the delay in school openings as a result of the swine flu outbreak. The slowdown in economic and business activity was further exacerbated by successive natural calamities, weakening what is already the slowest quarter of the year historically.

“While we anticipate the usual boost in the fourth quarter from holiday spending, we expect that this may be somewhat dampened as the recent typhoons caused extensive damage all around. Even with OFW remittances holding up, we may see consumers adjusting their budgets and rethinking their spending priorities,” Pangilinan explained.

PLDT’s total cellular subscriber base grew to 39.1 million subscribers, with main unit Smart Communications adding 3.9 million subscribers in the first nine months. Smart recorded net additions of over 1.6 million to end the period with 22.5 million subscribers while Talk ‘N Text added 2.2 million subscribers to end the period with 16.6 million subscribers.

“The growing popularity of unlimited voice packages indicates a shift in consumer preferences and we have taken note of that in our recent service offerings. Moreover, the competitive landscape is heating up as operators intensify their efforts to offer the best value to consumers at a time when tough economic conditions and regulatory changes are changing subscriber behaviour. We need to adapt as have in the past,” Nazareno said.

He explained that the country’s cellular SIM penetration rate is now at 80 percent, inclusive of multiple SIMs. “This means that new subscribers will come from the lower market segments with lower average revenue per user (ARPU).”

Nazareno also reported that fixed line service revenues increased four percent to P38.2 billion in the first nine months from P36.7 billion in the same period last year.

“The fixed line business has produced three straight quarters of revenue growth, no mean feat in this age when communications is accessible through numerous channels. We are encouraged by this progress and look to remain focused and sustain this transformation and improvement,” he added.

The company also reported that teams have already been formed by both PLDT and Meralco to determine how to implement the identified synergies between the two. (My comment: Wonder when PLDT/SMART will start mailing their bills electronically like Meralco already does so well?)

Meanwhile, PLDT’s total broadband subscriber base was at 1.37 million, with aggregate revenue contribution from broadband and Internet services at P10 billion for the first nine months, 26 percent higher than last year. Smart Bro wireless broadband subscribers for the period was at 802,000 while those for wired broadband (DSL) was at 548,000.

“We are determined to propagate broadband usage by facilitating the availability and wide adoption of access devices and riding the social networking wave. We recognize that social networking has changed the rules of the communications game and we are adapting our service to take advantage of that,” Smart chief wireless adviser Orlando Vea pointed out. MANILA, Philippines—Local telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. seeks to boost its cash flow from the fixed-line phone business—overshadowed by the fast growth of wireless phone usage over the years—with the pioneering offering of an unlimited nationwide landline call service for residential subscribers.

For an additional fixed monthly charge of P250 for post-paid residential landline subscribers, the PLDT “Call All” bundle provides a second line SIM (PLDT Landline Plus) which can be used in any open line handset, allowing users to make free local calls to any landline number in the same calling area.

Top PLDT officials explained that the service is like having an extension line that the user can bring anywhere in the Philippines and use to call any landline in its home area. The offer thus seeks to edge out the hybrid wireless-landline offerings of major competitors (which offer unlimited calls only within the same coverage area) by providing free calls even when the handset is brought outside the area code of the registered fixed line. This is for as long as the call is made to any landline within its area code.

For instance, a Manila subscriber can bring his wireless extension line to Cebu and call his family or friends in Manila for free. With the additional fee of P250 a month, the service thus comes all in at a price of P850 a month. It effectively waives the metering for national direct dialing (NDD) for calls made using the second SIM to its local area, making landline calls more affordable.

PLDT Frequent Disconnect Solution

This is just one possible solution if you are finding that you're PLDT MyDSL keeps getting disconnected.

The current standard modem for PLDT MyDSL is Xyzel P-### series. You will notice that it has three LED lights as its indicator.

1. DSL LED
2. Ethernet LED
3 Power LED

Some of you may encounter a situation that on certain hours your Power LED turns red and your DSL LED keeps dying. But then after a few hours the Power LED finally turns green and your Internet connection becomes stable.

For a long time I thought this problem was caused by the DSL server dying in the main office or because of too many subscribers, the network becomes strained due to overcapacity. But apparently, this was not the case.

I found this out when I unplugged all the cables (rj45 and rj11) connected to the Zyxel modem except for the power.

I discovered that the Power LED was still red. So that means the problem has nothing to do with being connected to the PLDT server.

I discovered that somehow the voltage supply provided by the electricity company fluctuates depending on the time of day.

In my case from 6pm to 11pm our voltage supply drops below 220. It seems that this is the peak hours in my neighborhood when a lot of people are using a lot of electricity.

Most normal appliances can handle this fluctuation and but that is the problem with Zyxel modems. If the voltage supply drops they become very unstable. Hence you keep getting disconnected from the Internet.

Rebates from PLDT for disruption of service?

From a blogger online I came upon a little-known fact about my PLDT subscription because of Typhoon Ondoy. The phone services in our area in Pateros/Pasig went down in the evening of 10 October 2009. When I called up PLDT's 172 hotline, I was told this was due to a major cable problem, and that they would not be able to provide an estimate on when services can be restored. In the past week or so, I have been calling their repair hotline, and in the few times I got lucky and was able to talk to a customer service representative, they still could not provide a commitment on this.

However, what really surprised me was their answer on whether we are entitled to a rebate for the disruption of service. All the customer service representatives that I was able to talk to confirmed that when services have been restored, I should call their Billing Department to apply for the rebate. Otherwise, no rebate will be made. This is even if I have already reported the problem to their call center.

Local telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. seeks to enlist more broadband subscribers by introducing a new service that makes it easier to watch television over the Internet.

PLDT announced yesterday that through its innovation, “Watchpad,” myDSL subscribers can now watch their favorite TV shows and films online. Initial channels now available include National Geographic, Cartoon Network, Pinoy Box Office, CNN, Animax Mobile, CNBC, and GMA 7.

Places like www.hulu.com and the famous youtube have more programming than you can watch. Don’t forget pbs.org. I once purchased a list of 3,000 online TV stations for about USD $20 and REALLY got my moneys’ worth out of it.

HISTORY OF PLDT Philippines

During the time of Spanish colonization of the Philippines, the Spaniards organized a telephone company that opened in 1890. PLDT was established on November 28, 1928, by an Act of the Philippine Legislature and approved by then-Governor-General Henry L. Stimson by means of a merger of four telephone companies under common US ownership. Known as Act 3436, the bill granted PLDT a 50-year charter and the right to establish a Philippine telephone network linking major points nationwide. However, PLDT had to meet a 40-day deadline to start implementing the network, which would be implemented over a period of one to four years.

By the 1930s, PLDT had an expansive fixed-line network and for the first time linked the Philippines to the outside world via radiotelephone services connecting the Philippines to the United States and other parts of the world.

Telephone service in the Philippines was interrupted due to World War II. At the end of the war, the Philippines’ communications infrastructure was in ruin. U.S. military authorities eventually handed over the remains of the communications infrastructure to PLDT in 1947, and with the help of massive U.S. aid to the Philippines during the 1940s and 1950s, PLDT recovered so quickly that its telephone subscribers outpaced that of pre-war levels by 1953.
